Jeethu Joseph has reiterated his credentials as a master of the thriller genre. His movie Kooman 2022, starring ‘Asif Ali’, written by K.R Krishnakumar and jointly produced by Listin Stephen and Allwin Antony is a mystic thriller movie. The film also stars Renji Panicker, Jaffer Idukki, Baburaj, Henna Reji Koshy, and Meghananthan. In holding a grudge, and building it up into something big enough to take revenge, Giri (Asif Ali) displays a twisted criminal bent of mind. But he also happens to be a policeman with a particularly sharp brain.CPO Giri, who works in a police station on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, is our central protagonist.Set in the backdrop of a small village, Kooman is the journey of a lower-ranking police officer, Giri Shanker (Asif Ali), told through a suspenseful tale. Giri might come across as a calm and intelligent officer, but soon you realize that beneath the serene facade is a vengeful man. As the movie progresses, he emerges as a problem solver. When a new CI took charge in the station, Giri wasn’t appreciated for his efforts, and a particular incident involving the CI and Giri led to Giri’s humiliation. Giri’s ego-driven counter-attack and where it leads him eventually is what we see in Kooman.
The shame and embarrassment compel him to become protege to a veteran robber (the ever-reliable Jaffer Idukki), who activates a switch that turns on Giri’s second personality. And then something happens post-interval— to say it’s the kind of material at which Jeethu Joseph is so good. The fake smile of Giri when his ego gets hurt looked terrific. Jaffar Idukki, as the thief, was also brilliant. The unnamed town, like in Drishyam, has a tea shop where the major happenings are discussed. Asif Ali, Deepak Parambol, and Baiju with a sidekick all play frequent visitors of the place. Women in the movie appear for very short duration. The mothers role played by Pauly Wilson and HennahReji Koshy plays a young woman in the neighbourhood whom Giri appears to have an interest in, but their conversations are mostly formal, ending with sweet smiles. The night too plays a very big role in the film, which explains the title (meaning owl). The first half of the film, with a lively song (music by Vishnu Syam) to accompany Giri’s misadventures, ends smoothly, leaving you gasping for what’s next to come. The visuals, cuts, and background score have helped the film in gaining the structure of a standard thriller. The investigation does light some interest, but the reveal does not really shock.Kooman is an interesting thriller that never bores you. Kooman is a rewarding experience with its layered screenplay and a controlled performance by Asif Ali.
